If you are staying downtown or visiting the Fremont Street Experience, your cannabis experience will look different from the Strip corridor. The good news: you are closer to NuWu Cannabis Marketplace — the world's largest dispensary, with a 24-hour drive-thru and an on-site consumption lounge. The bad news: the same fake dispensary problem that plagues the Strip exists on Fremont Street, too.
Downtown vs. The Strip
Downtown Las Vegas and the Strip are two distinct experiences, separated by about 4 miles. For cannabis, the key differences are:
| The Strip | Downtown / Fremont | |
|---|---|---|
| Nearest dispensary | Multiple options within 5–15 min rideshare | NuWu Cannabis Marketplace (~2 miles from Fremont Street) |
| Consumption lounge | DAZED! at Planet 13 (state-licensed) | NuWu SkyHigh Lounge (tribal-regulated) |
| Walkability | Dispensaries not walkable from Strip hotels | NuWu not walkable from Fremont, but a short rideshare |
| Fake shops | Widespread on the Strip | Present on Fremont Street |
| Vibe | Tourist-heavy, mega-resort focused | More local, walkable, Arts District nearby |
Fake Dispensaries on Fremont Street
The same scam that operates on the Strip is alive and well on Fremont Street. Shops using cannabis leaf imagery, green cross symbols, and names like "dispensary" or "cannabis" sell hemp and CBD products — not real cannabis. These products will not produce the effects of THC and may contain harmful synthetic compounds.
The rule is the same as the Strip: if it is on Fremont Street, it is not a real dispensary. Nevada's 1,500-foot gaming license rule prohibits licensed dispensaries from operating near casinos, and Fremont Street is lined with them. Any shop you see selling "cannabis" on Fremont Street is selling hemp or CBD under misleading branding.
Real dispensaries have a vestibule with ID verification, a CCB license number displayed, and staff who scan your ID before you enter the sales floor. Fake shops let you walk in freely, display no license numbers, and sell products off open shelves. If you can walk in without showing ID, walk right back out.
NuWu Cannabis Marketplace
NuWu Cannabis Marketplace is the closest real dispensary to the downtown/Fremont area and is the standout cannabis destination for downtown visitors. Operated by the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe on sovereign tribal land, NuWu has earned a reputation as the world's largest dispensary.
| Address | 1235 Paiute Cir, Las Vegas, NV 89106 |
|---|---|
| Hours | 24/7 — open around the clock, every day |
| Drive-Thru | 24-hour drive-thru available |
| Operator | Las Vegas Paiute Tribe (sovereign tribal land) |
| Distance from Fremont | ~2 miles from the Fremont Street Experience |
| Consumption Lounge | SkyHigh Lounge — on-site consumption (tribal-regulated, operating since 2019) |
| Age Requirement | 21+ with valid government-issued photo ID |
NuWu is billed as the world's largest dispensary, and the 24-hour operation is especially convenient for downtown visitors. Whether you are coming back from a late show on Fremont Street or heading out early before a day trip, NuWu is open.
SkyHigh Lounge
The NuWu SkyHigh Lounge is an on-site consumption lounge that has been operating since 2019 — years before any state-licensed lounge opened. Because NuWu sits on sovereign tribal land, the lounge operates under the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe's own regulations, not the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board's rules.
For downtown visitors, SkyHigh is the most accessible consumption lounge. You can purchase cannabis at NuWu and consume it on-site in the lounge without needing to find a private location.
NuWu and the SkyHigh Lounge operate on sovereign tribal land under the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe's authority. Product selection, pricing, operational standards, and lounge rules are set by the tribe rather than the state. Verify current hours, lounge availability, and policies before visiting.
Getting from Fremont Street to NuWu
NuWu is approximately 2 miles from the Fremont Street Experience. It is not a comfortable walk, but it is a very short ride:
| Method | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Uber / Lyft | ~5 minutes | $5–$10 |
| Taxi | ~5 minutes | $8–$12 |
| Walking | ~35–40 minutes | Free (but not recommended — limited sidewalks in some areas) |
A rideshare is the best option. The ride is short enough that surge pricing rarely matters, and you avoid navigating a route that is not particularly pedestrian-friendly.
Other Dispensaries Near Downtown
Beyond NuWu, several licensed dispensaries are accessible from the downtown area by rideshare. None are walkable from Fremont Street itself, but most are within a 5–15 minute Uber or Lyft ride. The same dispensaries that serve Strip tourists — Planet 13, The Dispensary, Reef, and others — are all reachable from downtown as well.

Where to Consume Downtown
Legal consumption options for downtown visitors:
NuWu SkyHigh Lounge
The most accessible consumption lounge from downtown. Located at NuWu Cannabis Marketplace on tribal land. Purchase cannabis on-site and consume in the lounge. Operating since 2019 under tribal regulation.
Cannabis-Friendly Vacation Rentals
The Arts District (18b) and surrounding neighborhoods south of Fremont Street have vacation rentals that permit cannabis consumption. Always verify the property's cannabis policy before booking.
Where You Cannot Consume
Public consumption is illegal in Nevada, and this is strictly enforced downtown. You cannot consume cannabis at:
- Fremont Street bars and restaurants — including outdoor patios
- Casino properties — all casino floors, hotel rooms, and common areas prohibit cannabis
- Fremont Street Experience venues and attractions — the entire pedestrian mall, zip lines, stages, and surrounding areas
- Public sidewalks and streets — anywhere open to public view
- Downtown hotel rooms — the same hotel cleaning fees ($250–$1,000) that apply on the Strip apply downtown
Public consumption fines are the same downtown as on the Strip: up to $600 for a first offense and $1,000 for a second offense. Metro police patrol both areas. The more relaxed vibe of Fremont Street does not mean more relaxed enforcement.
The Arts District & Downtown Cannabis Culture
The Arts District (18b), located south of Fremont Street, has a more relaxed, local vibe compared to both the Strip and the Fremont tourist corridor. The neighborhood is home to galleries, vintage shops, craft breweries, and a creative community.
While some galleries and private venues in the Arts District may be more cannabis-tolerant in private settings, public consumption is still illegal everywhere in the Arts District. The key distinction is "public" vs. "private" — a private event at a gallery with the owner's permission is different from smoking on the sidewalk outside one.
The Arts District is also where you are most likely to find cannabis-friendly vacation rentals. Property owners in this neighborhood tend to be more accommodating of cannabis use compared to the large hotel chains downtown and on the Strip.
Fremont Street Experience Rules
The Fremont Street Experience — the five-block pedestrian mall with the Viva Vision canopy — follows the same cannabis rules as the Strip:
- No consumption of cannabis in any form — smoking, vaping, edibles, or otherwise — anywhere within the Fremont Street Experience
- No consumption at any Fremont Street venue, bar, restaurant, or attraction
- No consumption in casino properties along Fremont Street (Golden Nugget, Four Queens, Binion's, Fremont Hotel, etc.)
- No consumption on adjacent streets, parking garages, or public areas
Enforcement is real. LVMPD officers and Fremont Street Experience security patrol the area regularly. The pedestrian mall has extensive camera coverage. Do not assume the more casual atmosphere means cannabis use is overlooked.
Getting Between Downtown and the Strip
If you want to visit Strip-area dispensaries or the DAZED! lounge at Planet 13 from downtown, here is what to expect:
| Method | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Uber / Lyft | 10–15 minutes | $10–$15 |
| Taxi | 10–15 minutes | $15–$25 |
| RTC Deuce Bus | 30–45 minutes | $6 (2-hour pass) / $8 (24-hour pass) |
Rideshare is the fastest option. Traffic between downtown and the Strip is usually manageable except during major events and weekend evenings. If you are transporting cannabis, remember to keep it in the sealed dispensary exit bag during the ride.
